DO: The Right Way to Enjoy Cannabis in Montana
Only purchase cannabis from CARD-licensed dispensaries. Every Montana dispensary is 100% locally owned — no multi-state operators allowed. Montana has approximately 557 dispensaries statewide. Licensed dispensaries guarantee lab-tested, properly labeled products tracked through Metrc.
You must be 21 or older with a valid government-issued photo ID. Driver's license, passport, state ID, or military ID from any state or country accepted. No residency requirement — tourists buy the same products at the same prices as Montana residents.
Montana has no consumption lounges and no on-site consumption at dispensaries. Your legal options are private property (your own home or someone else's with permission) and cannabis-friendly lodging. Confirm directly with your host before booking.
Keep cannabis in sealed original packaging from the dispensary. When driving, store in the trunk or glove box — never on seats or in the open. Treat it like an open container of alcohol.
Most Montana dispensaries are cash-only or cash-preferred due to federal banking restrictions. ATMs are typically on-site but charge $3–$5 fees. Budget for 20–23% tax on top of the purchase price (20% state + up to 3% local).
Budtenders are knowledgeable professionals who can help you navigate Montana's craft market. Tipping is appreciated, just as you would tip a bartender.
If you are new to cannabis, start with 2.5–5mg THC for edibles (wait 1–2 hours before taking more) or one small puff of flower (wait 10–15 minutes). Montana's craft-grown cannabis can be potent — flower goes up to the 35% THC cap. Ask your budtender for their lowest-dose recommendation. Visit TryCannabis.org for dosing guidance.
If your trip includes Glacier or Yellowstone, purchase and consume at your private lodging in a gateway town before entering the park. Leave all cannabis behind. Buy more when you return.
DON'T: Common Mistakes That Can Get You in Trouble
This is the #1 rule for Montana visitors. Glacier National Park, Yellowstone National Park, national forests (Flathead, Gallatin, Lolo, Lewis & Clark), BLM land, and wildlife refuges are all federal jurisdiction. Cannabis on federal land is a federal misdemeanor: up to 1 year in prison, $1,000 fine. Read our National Park Warning.
Public consumption carries a $50 fine plus forfeiture. This includes streets, sidewalks, parks, trails, rivers, trailhead parking lots, campgrounds, ski slopes, and any place open to public view.
Most Montana hotels, lodges, and resorts prohibit cannabis use on their property. Violating hotel policy can result in cleaning fees and removal. Always check your lodging's cannabis policy before booking. Cannabis-friendly vacation rentals exist, but confirm directly with the host.
Montana borders zero legal recreational states. Idaho, Wyoming, North Dakota, and South Dakota all prohibit recreational cannabis. Crossing any state line is a federal crime and will also trigger the destination state's penalties. Do not transport cannabis out of Montana.
TSA operates under federal law at all airports. Do not bring cannabis through security at Missoula (MSO), Bozeman (BZN), Kalispell/Glacier Park (FCA), Billings (BIL), Helena (HLN), or any other Montana airport.
Montana has a strict 5 ng/mL per se THC limit. Any level above this is automatic legal impairment. Under 21: zero tolerance (any detectable THC = DUI). Wait at least 4–6 hours after smoking. A first DUI carries 24 hours–6 months jail and $600–$1,000 fine.
Mailing cannabis via USPS, FedEx, or UPS is a federal crime regardless of state law. Do not attempt to mail cannabis to yourself, to Montana, or from Montana.
Providing cannabis to anyone under 21 is a serious criminal offense. If you are traveling with children, store all cannabis products securely out of reach in child-resistant packaging.
Montana does not accept out-of-state medical cannabis cards. Any adult 21+ can buy recreational cannabis, but you will pay the 20% tax rate instead of the 4% medical rate.
